#PR – Ask the experts

I have run a series called meet the media on this blog for a number of years and have had the fortune of being able to discuss the relationship between PR and the media with some high profile and interesting people from our industry. Each interview offered something new and helped form the backbone of how Berkeley PR approached media relations.

As my role at Berkeley has evolved I have slowly moved further and further away from media relations. This coupled with the fact that I have seen the interviews blatantly ripped off by a number of people – one ex colleague of mine is using the same questions with just a GCSE standard of editing to make them look slightly different. Spot the difference:

Questions asked in an interview by ex colleague on 1 October:
What is your PR pet peeve?
Do you prefer a phone pitch from PRs or an email?
How many email/phone calls do you get from PRs per day?
What newspapers/magazines do you read?
What is your top tip for getting coverage in XXXXX magazine?

Questions I have been asking for past three years:
What is your pet hate of PR?
What is the best way to contact you?
How many emails / calls do you get a day?
Bar your own, which news titles do you read?
What do you want from a PR to help make your life easier?

So I have decided to hand the questions to my team at Berkeley PR and let them run the interviews from now, on the Berkeley PR blog. I will instead start a new series inspired by the books that I am reading.

I plan to start running monthly interviews here on my PR blog with experts that I believe the PR world can learn from. They might work directly in the PR industry or be slightly left field of it like my first interviewee Paco Underhill the international best selling author of Why we buy. Regular readers of this blog will know that I am a fan-boy of Paco’s work. Although aimed at the retail industry it encourages the science of understanding your customers – a skill that you need to have at an agency to best serve clients and to also help them  communicate with their customers.

I am just writing up this interview and it will go live tomorrow. Watch this space.

I have also been lucky enough to arrange to meet with one of my other PR heroes, David Meerman Scott and have a call with the author of Drive, Daniel Pink, in the new year. Exciting for me but should also be an insightful and interesting read for the rest of you.
